Our experience adopting was incredible! The cats were obviously well cared for, and the shelter made arrangements to meet us outside of regular hours to get our new cats home faster. You can tell that everyone at the shelter really cares. They sent us home with adorable drawing of the cats from a local school, a bag of toys and goodies, and really good information that was easy to access. Thanks for helping us and our kitties find their forever home!

I had to surrender a kitten that I truly loved even though I'd only had him about 2 weeks. No matter what I did to encourage my 2 adult cats to accept him, they refused with howls and growls and hisses, so I finally admitted to myself that he would be better off with someone else. While I was at the shelter, I fought off tears and finally broke down and cried. I'd had lots of dogs and cats in my life and had never had to surrender any of them, and it was breaking my heart. The staff was so caring and encouraging. They assured me that he would go to a foster home that had other kittens and that he would receive the best of care. I'll never forget how kind and patient they were during that impossibly difficult time.

We had the most AWSOME visit at this shelter. What they do is essential for our Fur babies. Those animals that don’t ask to be born, but are brought into our world of people maybe not wanting them or people being irresponsible about neutering their pets. I’ve done both, the designer pet & the furry lil’ nut route. At this stage in our life, we just adopted a Jr/senior dog who I believe got a bad review/rap but we bonded immediately. We brought Millie home & she is one of the best, most well behaved dogs we’ve ever adopted. Milliek is all LOVE wrapped up in a fur ball. Thank you Ames Shelter. UPDATE: 12-28-25 Well….. several months & several additional doggie lbs. later our story continues. My husband & I are so in love with our fur baby daughter Millie. Since adopting Millie, who started

What a gem of an animal rescue. Although small, they had lots of well cared for rescues. The staff were kind and definitely committed. While visiting my newly adopted furbaby, they checked on us to make sure everything was going OK while giving us plenty of time to play and interact. We also received heartworm and flea preventative, a bed and a toy! Great way to start off with our new baby.

My daughter and I volunteer at the Ames Animal Shelter. All the staff care for the animals so completely. We are grateful for the opportunity to be involved.
