Wilson Parrot Foundation

I have been volunteering at Wilson Parrot Foundation for 4 months and have really enjoyed learning about parrots and their care. They have a room for the small parrots, three large aviaries for the big parrots, and most of the main level for the medium size parrots. I love that they all have cages but are always open so they can socialize and roam. They are well fed every day with fresh fruit and veggies, pellets, and water in each cage. The big birds have huge wooden structures they can climb all over. I recommend this non profit if you want an interesting volunteering experience and really helping the birds.

This review is shared for those who may be considering surrendering their bird. I am a bird owner and lover. I volunteered here for about six weeks and left feeling unsettled for a few important reasons. Although I appreciate the efforts of anyone who cares for unwanted animals, after volunteering here I would never choose to leave my birds here knowing what I know were I ever to be in a position of having to surrender them. Pros: the facility is nice and clean. The volunteers are dedicated and passionate. The birds are treated with good intentions. Cons: 1) the birds are fed chop that consists mainly of fruit. The Wilson parrot foundation is really a super great parrot rescue center. All the birds are taken care of very well and they are not just staying in the cages. Their cages are open most of the time. But people there pay attention to which ones cannot be together, so if those birds are out of the cages, some need to be in their cages etc. so many small things that are important to the birds’ health and wellbeing. I live in the west coast, so I cannon be there to do real help but can only do donation. They do need volunteers and donation as well!

I’ve donated and volunteered there since 2008. Brian knows more about parrots than anyone I’ve met in over 30 years of animal rescue. The parrot industry is unregulated and lucrative and greedy breeders will sell a bird to anyone regardless of whether they understand the responsibility and work that comes with having a parrot as a pet. These birds live the lifespan of a healthy human, and since most of these birds are the result of failed homes, Brian is extremely careful about who adopts them. His requirements are stringent, but they are in the best interest of the bird. When you volunteer you not only bond with the bird, learn how to care for it, prove that you know what you are doing, and it really helps the Foundation. I volunteered here for 7 months and found that it is all smoke and mirrors. Brian puts on a good show and has made a fantasy world for himself, but it isn't reality for the parrots who are unlucky enough to live there. If you doubt, spend some quality time there yourself.
