I cannot recommend Veterinary Behavior Specialties of Minnesota Enough. Dr. Squire and Jasmine have both been wonderful and I have seen a huge improvement in my sweet neurotic baby Hank. I had looked into taking him here a few years ago and decided the cost was too high, not accounting for the insane amount of money I spent on Doggy Daycare to mitigate his seperation anxiety over the years and visits with other vets that did not have a lot to offer. Our current vet recommended we try a behaviorist so I decided to take the leap. The initial intake is very in depth and the initial appointment is super long and involved. I highly recommend Veterinary Behavior Specialties of Minnesota for anyone who is struggling with reactivity. I've been through SO many trainers for my dog Finley in the past 4+ years, with inconsistent results. Finally, one of the trainers wanted to do e-collar training with him to work on it. I asked our vet, who encouraged us to go here instead, and it was the BEST decision. We've been working with them since November, and I've seen so many positive changes with Finley - and together we've had so many wins! He's recently been able to go to group agility classes, walk right past people without reacting, and was even "surprised" by someone walking past the other day (I also was surprised so I couldn't even prepare) without reacting. We brought one of our dogs in here because he is reactive toward children and when strangers enter our home. We’ve worked with other trainers and the behavior persisted so we figured we’d try a behaviorist to get another point of view. Upon our first appointment, we had good conversations with the doctor and she gave us a few tips (a lot of what we talked about we already knew). It felt like the whole point of the appointment was to prescribe him medication, though, since that was really the only written recommendation we ever received. He’s a chill dog otherwise and I feel like he doesn’t need the medication that was prescribed for multiple times a day - I’m not a fan of medicating when it’s not necessary, and this felt unnecessary. The professionals at Minnesota Veterinary Behavior Specialists made our lives so much better by teaching us how to reduce Buddy’s separation anxiety. They gave us strategies that taught Buddy new behaviors—now we can confidently leave him at home while we go out for a few hours. We don’t have to worry that he’ll howl and bother the neighbors; we’re calmer and so is he. In addition to behavior management strategies, medications were helpful in reducing his anxiety. This was often a trial process, but we worked together to gradually find the right balance for Buddy’s comfort and a better quality of life for him (and us).
