The Humane Society

First, quick backstory - we adopted Kipper, Westy/Husky mix puppy in 2008 from the Broome County Humane Society. He turned 17 last May 2025. He was the "face of our family" as my youngest daughter said. To say we loved him deeply is an understatement. Due to failing health, pain, loss of vision, age related stuff, he recently had his last vet visit. Today I visited the "new & improved" Humane Society and this was my impression. They have captured the essence of our evolved understanding of dogs. Truly a humane approach to dogs that are between homes. I love the glass doors with bar space on the bottom - no cages! I found this shelter when I was deep on the hunt for my next companion. It’s a pretty far drive for me but I decided to take it a few weekends ago to meet a few of their pups. I fell in love with one and while the adoption slipped through their coordinators hands and she sent him off with another family I still feel inclined to leave a good review. The work they do is not unnoticed and their help there really was great at answering all my questions. Although it broke my heart to not adopt the dog I was told I would be adopting it lead me to a different shelter to find my newest family member. I was very upset in the beginning but a phone call from the coordinator apologizing truly made a difference. I adopted my senior Persian cat from here in 2019. I drove 5 hours each way to get him, & we had a very special bond that I haven't had with any other cats in my life. He was a very special cat who greeted everyone who came into our home as well as other cats that I fostered. I was very happy with the staff and would highly recommend this Humane Society for a furry family addition.

Great services offered at a very inexpensive price. But picking up the cat, it was very unorganized. There were about 30 people there whose cats had been fixed that day. It was about 30° outside, I had 2 little kids with me and they expected me to stand outside the door until they called my cat's name, couldn't even wait in our car. This was after standing outside for a half an hour listening to instructions...

Came here for a grooming appointment and they did a great job!! My dog is very difficult to deal with, especially for strangers, but Derek was able to handle him!! He took his time to make him feel comfortable for their first session, and the haircut came out so nice!! 🥰
