Our first two adoptions were handled beautifully. Our applications were thoroughly reviewed, we visited the pets in their foster homes, and took them home after spaying, along with medical documentation. From the time of application to taking custody of the pet it was about one month. However, that was in 2010 and 2015. In late 2025 we applied to adopt a kitten and no one contacted us for a month. Even then, it was just a text saying we could come pick up the cat. We had to decline the first one because one of our other cats was very ill and needed full-time care. Two months later, after our sick cat died in 2026, we applied to adopt again. Nothing was checked out on our application. Requests to see the cat before bringing her home were ignored. I’m actually grateful HHS screens applicants to ensure pets are placed in the optimal home. If you’re declined doesn’t mean you can’t provide a good home, just that it wasn’t the right fit for that particular pet. Keep trying. Unlike the city shelter, HHS places their homeless pets with foster families. This allows pets to be socialized, potty trained, and receive needed medical care. The expense to rescue and take in these homeless pets is high. Adoption proceeds go to rescuing homeless pets, neutering and feeding them, and providing life saving surgeries. I’ve both adopted a pet and adopted out a homeless dog through HHS. They do an amazing job. They go out of their way to rescue as many pets as possible on a very tight budget. Great experience adopting our new boy Simon! It was obvious that the volunteers/employees care about their animals and placing them with the right family. Shout out to Leah, Sue and Angie!! They were wonderful and professional in helping me find our new family member.

Our young lady is so much fun. She is a little shy. We adopted her late June so she is still adjusting. Meet Gracen. We call her Gracie or kitty. She is spoiled rotten already. We love her 💕 She has come a long way. We spoil her. She is loved 🥰

Do not adopt or support this organization. 1. They charge $150 to adopt when the San Antonio shelter charges $34. 2. They discriminate against people. 3. Have to go to a foster home to see a pet. Going to a strangers home is not safe. 4. Letting the foster family make decisions on if you can take the animal. 5. Very invasive adoption process they even want to know your employer , which should be none of their concern. They’re all concern should be. Do I have the funds to pay for the cat or dog. Read all the other negative reviews. There are a lot out there.
