Cortez Animal Bed & Breakfast

On vacation and we needed to leave our dog somewhere safe while visiting Mesa Verde. They were very accommodating, friendly, answered all of our questions, and we felt our dog was safe with them.

It has taken me a long time to find the courage to write this review because I am still so deeply upset by what happened. Last summer I boarded my dog and cat here for the weekend. When I picked them up and brought them home, my cat was unable to use his back legs. He was also covered in shit and urine. After bringing him to multiple emergency vets, we found he formed a blood clot during his visit there, an extremely painful and often fatal condition. Meaning that when this occurred, the staff ignored it. When I tried to get answers from this place, they gave little information or concern. I was told by one staff member that they often let the cats out of their cages and don’t supervise them. When I demanded a refund they only provided a refund for my cat’s portion of the stay. I was planning to leave my 12 lb. shitsu mix at this place for the day. They told me it was air conditioned. Luckily, I went the day before to check it out and do paperwork. The kennels are not airconditioned and it was 100 degrees that day in August. My dog might have died there due to the extreme heat, even in the kennels. The dogs that were kenneled sounded desperate to get out. If you care about your pet, do not use this facility during hot weather.

Years ago, I left my dog there several times. This year I highly recommended the facility to friends. Day before yesterday, two people in that family called and they were treated very rudely by whomever answered the phone. NO questions were answered - just “come in and fill out the paperwork and then you’ll know”. Nope, went elsewhere. This isn’t good PR!

I felt instantly at ease leaving my dog there. You can absolutely tell that the people who work there care about the dogs and cats they are taking care of. 💕 I highly recommend this place and will be using them again in the future! 🐶🐱💗
