City of Cortez Animal Shelter

They took in the stray dog I picked up with care and compassion. Simple and fast drop off for me. And they post the animals on Facebook to help find the owners or to adopt.

We camped at Mesa Verde with our GSP and needed a place to exercise him. This is a beautifully maintained park, we felt thankful to have found it.

I had a very good experience with the staff here and the adoption process when I was looking to rescue a dog after my beloved companion passed. I found the staff to be kind and caring and well organized. They do their best for the animals in their care and deserve as much support from the community as they can possibly receive - they have so many lovely cats and kittens for adoption as well as puppies and adult dogs.

No adopting unaltered dogs here is what I was told over phone when I heard it's actually supposed to be a like 75$ fee ontop of the 175$ to adopt a dog and not have it fixed, apparently calling the place they say otherwise "a dog can't leave without being fixed" that's messed up lock em' up and take their parts when someone wants them so they'll be less of a dog and more of a sad floor potato. I'm sorry I want a dog that's energetic and enjoys life not one's who's lifespan was just cut short on me.

I adopted my dog (named "Sugar" at the time, but now called Maya) at the Cortez shelter in early August of 2020. She is the light of my life....super sweet, very willing to please and extremely smart. The staff at the City of Cortez Animal Shelter was the most compassionate and helpful group of people I encountered during my search for a dog after the devastating loss of my senior GSD. The staff's love and caring for the animals at the shelter is top notch. Thanks to all of you again for all that you do in the best interest of the animals in your care! Dorothy Cedaredge, CO
