I would like to take a moment to share my experience at ACC in East Harlem. Our family pet of over 12 years suddenly became ill and, within the span of a month and a half, was diagnosed with renal failure. Despite consulting with specialists to determine the best course of action, it became clear that continuing invasive treatments, such as daily feeding through a needle, would only prolong suffering rather than preserve their quality of life. As difficult as it was, we made the heartbreaking decision to humanely euthanize our pet. While researching available options, the veterinary office we had been using quoted an exorbitant amount of money for euthanasia and cremation, which did not include the return of our pet’s ashes. There *are* staff here that really do care about the animals and are pleasant to work with. On the whole, though, I’d say this place is kind of a mess. Glad to have adopted my baby out of there after going through a trial adoption while he was still on a hold with the Department of Health. But here’s the thing — when you instruct people to bring an animal in before opening hours to be neutered or for other treatment, you should be ready to greet that person and take in the animal. Instead, I was left waiting outside the locked door after knocking and calling several times. While I waited, one member of the team who was walking dogs just completely ignored me when I asked how to get someone to open the door because I was instructed to come early. I adopted my cat over a year ago and have gone back to adopt a second cat with ACC. Their process is very easy, I like that you are able to see all their pets and behavior assessment online, and love that we get a free vet visit and a good amount of food.

We recently adopted our cat Big Worm from ACC, and the experience was amazing. Our counselor Demi was very helpful and made sure everything went smoothly from start to finish. Big Worm has been such a joy. She’s sweet, curious, and full of personality. You can tell she was well cared for and loved before coming home with us. Thank you to Demi, the foster family, and the entire ACC team for helping us find our perfect companion. Big Worm has brought so much happiness into our home, and we’re so grateful. I foster and just adopted from ACC. I highly recommend fostering and adopting from here. Both the foster and adoption staff I’ve worked with are all incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, professional, kind, and efficient. They have so many animals that need fostering and adopting and the staff working there provide so much support and assistance. It’s been a seamless and rewarding experience at ACC.
