On July 16, 2025, I got a new roommate. This is Reeses, the Countess of Pieces; a 9 yr old misunderstood and scared lady who was adopted and returned 3 times (first adoption from a shelter up north, was surrendered in Camarillo and was returned 2 times then transferred to Simi for the Cat Distribution Society to guide her to choose me). The other adopters were not meant to be hers- she was incompatible with other animals, rambunctious kids, or loud men with pointing fingers. The shelters were overcrowded and they still made time to pet her when she allowed it, put curtains on her cage (so she had a darker corner to hide from the chaos), and even moved her from Camarillo to Simi Valley so some fresh eyes could meet and bond with her. We adopted our 4-month-old Great Pyrenees puppy, Kodi, from Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) on November 26, 2025, believing we were bringing home a healthy dog. He had been neutered by VCAS just one day prior, on November 25, and was placed up for adoption immediately afterward. Within days of adoption, Kodi began showing signs of illness, including coughing, mucus discharge, and lethargy. We took him to the vet on December 1, where he was initially diagnosed with kennel cough and treated accordingly. When his condition rapidly worsened — with significant loss of appetite and energy — we returned to the vet and learned he had developed pneumonia. Everyone here is very helpful and kind. They clearly love animals and their job. Alexa was so helpful in assisting me with a dog. The shelter is clean and they have so many wonderful animals that need homes.

Disappointed is an understatement. I followed their rules clearly stated on their website. Do not apply or wait in line for a dog whose adoption date hasn’t been reached yet. Well I’ve been waiting till an adoptable dogs adoption date to get an appointment, just to see that they allowed her to be adopted a day before she was even allowed to be released… if that were the case I would have applied and gotten an appointment the day before she was supposed to be released too. Found a couple reviews saying this happened to them as well…guess they can’t follow their own rules. So why have them? Today’s date 11/18 - shes only adoptable on 11/19
