Pope Memorial Humane Society - Cocheco Valley

Me and my boyfriend recently went to this shelter, and saw a little cat who was very skittish, hiding in his box.The staff were very honest with us about his past, which is very very appreciative - making sure we understood that it may take some time for him to open up, given his past. After adopting him, he did hide under the bed and didn’t really come out, so we would give him a bowl of food under the bed, occasionally petting him and giving him a treat until he felt comfortable enough and ready to come out. After only three days, he came out, and started to get to know the other two cats that we have in our home. He sleeps in bed with us, sleeps and plays with our other cats, and shows us so much love, we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our other two cats absolutely love him. Seeing him

My husband and I adopted our cats Freddy and Jason (formerly known as Leo and Levi) from Pope Memorial at the end of January. Needless to say, we had the BEST experience at this humane society! The staff is so sweet and informative, but also very supportive. We went in knowing we wanted to adopt a cat, and they made it so easy to do so. Even though our Jason (Leo) was very shy and scared, he's now broken out of his shell and is a little love bug! Freddy (Levi) always was but, now he's definitely showing his personality more now. There are so many amazing things I could say about PMHS! Thank you all who helped us in adopting these two adventurous and loving boys. We are forever grateful!

Edit- I’m taking some stars off for being misleading. My poor honey girl was adopted out with an age of 4. I found out through my vet that she is actually 10, and Pope Memorial noted it in her chart and still adopted her out as 4. I would have adopted her anyways but it’s very disheartening to be lied to and find out my kids get less time with their furry friend. My kids have been begging for a cat for ages, and we finally decided they were ready last week. I scoped the website to see if any of the cats there would be a good fit for our house and found our sweet Honey. I filled out the application and it was approved super fast. I’m giving 2 stars cause of a lot of things. 1. Misinformation and lack of on my dog. Fell in love with my dog at first sight. The log book with their info was lacking alot of information like her separation anxiety and OCD which once I agreed to adopt her- i found out that she’s on these heavy medication. Lack of transparency so now she’s on heavy medication that i’ve finally weaned her off it. 2. She’s not an Aussie shepherd but actually a carolina dog which again - huge lie on her profile. She had a traumatic experience as a pup and we didn’t have her medical records until our vet asked them for it which again leads to my lack of transparency stance 3. her report showed how much weight she lost while being there which was alarming even for a surrendered dog. I recently purchased ecards for Valentine's Day from Pope memorial, when the card's were not received I contacted the person on my receipt, come to find out I had put in incorrect dates for delivery, in a matter of minutes they had corrected my error and made delivery of the cards.
