Placer SPCA

Amazing facility probably the best I have ever seen. Staff just as amazing and we instantly fell in love with this wonderful dog olive that we adopted. My daughter and I are also going to hopefully start volunteering soon.

My family and I adopted an adorable puppy. We got him home and he started having horrible diarrhea and throwing up indigested dog food (we hadn’t yet fed him). Throughout the night and the following morning it continued. Spoke with SPCA and said I was worried he had an obstruction and I hadn’t even had him 24 hrs. They said the only thing they could do was to take him back (no refund of the $300 adoption fee). I asked if their vets could treat and I could pay. Nope. Could I turn him in and then adopt him again. No guarantee we could get him. So in less than 24hrs of having him I payed $1400 at the vet for sonogram and meds to induce more vomiting to get all of the fabric out of him that he had eaten prior to adoption. Got a call from the vet yesterday that he has Giardia as well. Another $

Staff smiling and helpful. Nice to see so many volunteers! Facility clean. If u haven't been to an animal shelter in years; things have changed for the better. Go check it out. If u can't adopt; consider becoming a Foster parent; they make it very easy!

Extremely disappointing that they require you to make an appointment to meet any of the animals. Then they only have weekday appointments, weeks out, and you can only meet the one animal you apply for? How is this helping get animals into homes. Meanwhile the receptionists are just sitting at the front desk chatting - why can’t they let us in to pet the animals? Really should consider a policy change as these animals need as much love and enrichment as possible not to be sitting locked up in cages longer than necessary.

This SPCA is a nice center that cares for animals pending adoption. With that said, when you compare it with the close by Sacramento SPCA it falls short in many categories. 1) The appointment system is a silly and an unnecessary barrier to adopt when the goal is to place animals as quickly and safely as possible out of the shelter environment. The fact is that it cuts shelter costs the faster an animal leaves the facility. To have to wait upwards of 24 hours depending on appointment times is an unnecessary barrier. To add to this, rushing a family closing at the end of the 30 minute time slot that they "must decide soon or will need to leave" creates a sense of a rush which can cause an animal to return to the shelter environment and can create a sense of buyer's remorse much like being
