Owensboro Humane Society

Last year, after moving to the area, my family and I visited the Owensboro Humane Society to look for a potential pet and to inquire about volunteer opportunities. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. When we arrived during posted business hours, no staff were present at the shelter. While waiting, we spent time near the fence visiting a horse, hoping someone would appear. Eventually, I called the number listed and a woman answered. When I asked if we could come in to view animals available for adoption, she insisted on knowing which specific animal we wanted to see. I explained that, like many families, we hoped to meet animals in person and let our hearts guide the decision. The staff was overall unkind. The main lady kept cutting me off and honestly made it seem like she didn't want to find homes for the dogs in their care. We were very interested in a dog(Charlie, very very sweet pup!) but the costumer service was terrible and we will not return because of that.

I do volunteer work here, & I love it! This is the only true no-kill animal shelter in the state. There are around 40 to 50 beautiful cats that are up for adoption. They live in 3 different rooms & are well taken care of. There are also around 10 different dogs & 4 beautiful horses. Owensboro Humane Society offers a low-cost spay & neuter clinic, nail clinic, and is ran on donations only, so whether it's money, food, cleaning supplies, pet supplies, or blankets, all donations are greatly appreciated!🐕🐈🐾🐎🐎

My husband and I were in town and wanted to stop by to see what kind of dogs they had since we had been looking to adopt. We were approached outside by some lady with a shaved head. She was extremely rude and kept interrupting us when we tried to ask if they were open or if dogs were available to look at. She kept interrupting with “what exactly are you needing?” in a rude manner like we inconvenienced her. Her personality definitely could chase potential adopters away. She told us they don’t let people see the animals unless they are wanting to adopt, but she didn’t let us finish a sentence to say we wanted to adopt. After the interaction we just decided to leave anyways and let it be. It was enough to not wanna even look into adopting with them. We had no idea they don’t show animals unl

We only looked at one room of cats, but they were healthy and well-adjusted, eager for love and attention, and just delightful. Cindy admits to being crazy about cats, and she is crazy in all the right ways to be a cat herder. We pick up our new fur baby on Friday.
