Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center

I cannot put into words how frustrated I am with this adoption center. I’m currently in the process of adopting a 4 month old kitten. The process begins with fostering until they finish their immunization and boosters, are at least 4 months old, and then finalizing the adoption after they are neutered/spayed. I was told when I was putting in the paperwork for the kitten that he was already 4 months old and had finished his immunizations and boosters. So the next and final step would be getting him spayed. The day before I was supposed to pick him up to begin fostering for adoption, I called for more information and to make sure that there were no holdups on the process, they didn’t answer. I have mixed feelings about this place. It was immediately clear the shelter is understaffed. We drove 45 minutes from out of town, across the HRBT, hoping to adopt a small dog (under 25 lbs, which has been very difficult to find). We arrived at opening, stood in line, and were let in all at once with a large crowd, which quickly overwhelmed the staff. The front desk team was kind, but phones were constantly ringing and there were many people standing around the kennels waiting for help. It took quite 30-40min before we FOUND an adoption counselor. Our counselor was lovely, but was assisting multiple families at the same time, and it was clear the staff were stretched very thin. I was very interested in adopting a kitten recently. First, I bonded with one that wasn't listed as being unavailable but I was told after 30 minutes or so after speaking to someone about him that he was actually going home the next day. The second one I bonded with ended up having some walking issues and wasn't going to be moved into the main floor, while the third one appeared to have a respiratory issue going on in the main floor and hence they became unsure on if they could leave. So, I kept peeking over to a duo that was "bonded." It was also a "pay one get one" type of scenario. I liked the both of them and was happy with their ages, even if it meant more responsibility. You could tell the employees/volunteers cared for all the animals there, they are just understaffed. Truly very nice people & you could tell they cared a lot. They take proper steps to adopting to anyone. The cats were all a bit timid but as expected. I didn't end out finding my soulmate here but they are a great shelter to adopt from!
