Hawthorn Country Store has you covered for pretty much all your animal needs. Every time I stop in, they’ve got exactly what I’m looking for—feed, supplies, and even the hard-to-find stuff. The team is always friendly and knows their products well, which makes it easy to get in, get what you need, and get back to your day. If you’ve got animals of any kind, this is the place to go. They really do have everything.

Finally, I found a local store that I can pick up chicken and feed. There are quite a bit of choice on chicken there. And the price is very reasonable. Price is the same regardless of the breed. Backyard Chickies are pricey and always sold out. You will have to pay double for the non-standard breed. Plus, even local shoppers still need to pay for shipping.

Always a great experience! Very friendly and helpful. If there's something you want they don't have, they will do what they can to get it. Once a year they do chick day. If you plan on getting chickens, this is the place. They have an amazing variety. Recommend getting there as early as possible, at least a couple of hours. Employees are very knowledgeable so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. If you need feed or hay they have it. You don't have to carry it either. Just make sure to let them know at the register and they will radio it out to the warehouse and they take it to your vehicle. They have a great section for food preservation, a decent book section for the DIYer, a good selection for bovine and equine care from tack to vaccines, along with administering equipment.

Our local feed supply store just a few miles away does not carry Aubi Chick hemp shavings. I drive 17 extra miles to Hawthorns just for the hemp shavings for my urban chicken coop and have been doing so for 5 years. If you haven’t tried hemp shavings they are 100% worth the extra price. They cut down on smell drastically if not to zero, low dust and compostable. For my size coop I only do a full shaving change every 2 years and throw them into the garden. I buy over the course of the year about 5 bags. I add DZ earth and vinegar to keep it fresher weekly. Usually after winter rains I add a bag to freshen the coop up because it’s a pretty airy coop. Excellent selection as compared to many other country stores in my area. The building is much larger inside than it appears when you first pull up. The staff is very knowledgeable and is always able to answer my questions. Each of the employees specializes in different livestock, rather than having a vague generalized knowledge. This diverse level of expertise allows them to better guide me in the right direction depending on my unique situation.
