Shady Grove Kennel

The sporting clays course was absolutely amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to take their shotgun out for a stroll!!

Shady Grove Kennel is phenomenal. We have a lab/coonhound mix that we got as a rescue as a puppy. She was developing a pushy attitude at home but showing a strong hunting and retrieving drive. A friend told us that Neil Selby had "trained nearly every breed to be a retrieving gun dog" so we decided to see if it was true and if Shady Grove could turn our pup around. Within a month of obedience training, we saw a major difference so decided to keep her there for two more months of gun dog training. After 3 total months of training, we have a respectful, motivated gun dog that loves her new job and purpose. Do not take your dog here. In conversation and correspondence with the owner, he agreed to provide upland training to my dogs. When I picked them up six weeks later and I asked him, he said that he had done no upland training at all because he “didn’t have any birds.” As anyone who has spent time around dog training knows, there are numerous sources for birds within an easy drive of this kennel. I expressed my surprise and, I believe, conveyed my disappointment, but left it at that because I could not undo what had not been done. Perhaps of even greater concern was the state of the dogs when I picked them up. They were lean when I dropped them off. During their stay at Shady Grove, they lost 9 and 10 pounds respectively, and their ribs protruded. My vet advised that I should not run them

I first went to Shady Grove hunting Preserve some 30 years ago with a dear friend and my experience was incredible. I went back today with two of my cousins after arranging the trip with Neal the owner. The guides, Aaron whose dogs we used, and bird handler, Matthew, were most accommodating, patient, kind and professional. Our experience was tremendous! Thank you Neal
