Stopped by Parrots in Paradise and it was easily one of the best things I’ve done out here. Beautiful property with ocean views, and Gerald and his mom Dorothy clearly pour their hearts into this place. Gerald’s tour was next level. The guy knows every one of the 100+ birds by name and story, and he really opened my eyes to how intelligent and emotional these birds are. Getting to step inside an enclosure with parrots on my shoulders was the cherry on top. If you get the chance, go. It’s a unique and family friendly tour.

I had the pleasure of visiting Parrots in Paradise this week with my parents, and it was truly a special experience. The sanctuary itself is set on a stunning ten-acre property with sweeping ocean views—peaceful, beautiful, and clearly a place created with care and intention. Gerald and his mom, Dorothy, run the sanctuary, and you can feel their heart in everything they do. Gerald led our guided tour and completely impressed us. His knowledge is extensive, but what stood out even more was his deep, personal connection to each of the 100+ parrots in his care. He shared the unique stories behind many of the birds and helped us understand just how emotionally sensitive and intelligent parrots are. It was both educational and genuinely moving. The highlight of the tour was being invited int

What a fantastic experience! We were so fortunate to squeeze in a (shorter), last minute private tour with Jerry! He was so knowledgeable about the birds & has passion for his work oozing out of him. The birds were lovely, gorgeous - each having their own unique background & journey on how they arrived in the parrots in paradise sanctuary. What Jerry & family are doing for the birds is beautiful & extraordinary. A documentary should be made about them & their impact on these beautiful birds. If you have a chance to visit while in Kona, we would highly recommend! The drive up is *totally* off the beaten path, but once you arrive, you’ll quickly realize that the work they’re doing was worth the drive!

If you’re anywhere near Kona, do not miss the Parrot Sanctuary — it’s hands-down one of the most heartwarming and unexpectedly magical experiences on the Big Island. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted not only by the vibrant colors and calls of hundreds of parrots but also by the deep sense of love and care that fills this place. The sanctuary is home to rescued parrots from all over, many of whom have found a forever home here after being neglected, abandoned, or outliving their original owners. It’s not just a visit — it’s a story of second chances. The staff and volunteers are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. They know each parrot by name, personality, and history. We learned so much about parrot behavior, care, and the very real emotional lives these intelligent crea

This place is such a gem! Throughout the tour, Jerry introduced us to every single resident bird, told us their history, about the species, and answered any questions we had. A number of times we were able to enter some of the flight cages and interact with the parrots, feed them nuts, and give them some cuddles. :) The family that owns and runs the sanctuary hosts of a variety of parrot species that are all rescues/pets that have had to be surrendered for one reason or another. They do a good deal of educating the public about keeping parrots as pets and it is clear that all of the birds here are extremely happy and well taken care of. Please consider supporting this sanctuary and visiting or donating, it takes a lot of hard work to keep it up and running!
