Newport Beach Animal Shelter

Newport Beach Animal shelter was absolutely incredible when we found a 7 week old abandoned kitten in a bush. The poor thing was so unwell and NBAS was so kind in helping us get her treated when no one else was willing to take the chance. Valerie kept us updated on the kittens health and is the reason she is alive today! We ended up adopting the kitten when she finished her treatment primarily due to how much the shelter cared for her and wanted her to have a loving home. We are forever grateful for their kindness- thank you!!!

My family and I had a great experience at this shelter. We found Ducky through Adopt-a-Pet and called to set up an appointment, communication was great and smooth. Valerie and her partner were great and let us get to know Ducky before adopting and we appreciated that. Meeting Ducky we could tell that they care for the animals. We're very happy with Ducky in our lives!

I am very reluctant to leave negative Google reviews, but my interaction with the shelter supervisor, Ms. Valerie Schomburg, was so disappointing and unpleasant that I feel obligated to share it. I’m actively looking to adopt a dog, and regularly check local shelters. Unfortunately, when I inquired about adopting through the Newport Beach shelter, Valerie was incredibly condescending, dismissive, and unhelpful. She cut me off multiple times, and monologued overbearingly with non-answers to my questions about adoption logistics. I have never had this sort of experience interacting with staff at other shelters (or with anyone, really), and I left feeling discouraged and upset. The saddest consequence of Valerie's conduct is that it directly undermines the shelter’s reputation and mission.

If I could give Valerie the supervisor and Stacy a 0 star rating I would because 1 star is still extremely gracious for these 2 witches. I found a French Bulldog in NP where it was raining on Christmas Day. He was cold, dirty and hungry. I bathed him and fed him and gave him water. Since it was Christmas Night and that sweet baby looked like he had been abandoned I called the animal shelter first thing in the morning to ask if he was chipped. I had to buy a collar and leash for the Frenchy so I could at least take him to use the restroom and I was told by Stacy when she called me threatening me that I was intending to keep him. I advised her I was NOT and I just needed to get him something so I could take him out. She stated that she was going to press charges on me with the DA for theft!

I am writing this review to share a deeply painful experience at the Newport Beach Animal Shelter. My service dog, Lusty — a Belgian Malinois, trained and certified to support my medical needs — was euthanized while in their custody. This happened without my consent, without notice, and without giving me a chance to appeal or intervene. When I sought answers, I was told by staff and officers that procedures had been followed, but later investigation documents were marked “Unfounded,” even though my evidence shows otherwise. The result was not just the wrongful loss of my dog, but the loss of my medical support animal, my emotional anchor, and my trust in those responsible for animal welfare. I have suffered severe harm as a result. A shelter should act with compassion and transparency,
