staff member was extremely rude and dismissive when we asked to see the cats. he said, "this is not a petting zoo." We are considering adopting a kitten. I understand they only want serious inquiries, however, I would have liked the opportunity to meet the cats before committing to it. as we already have two cats, we aren't necessarily jumping to adopt a third, however, if meeting the right one, we would highly consider it. I felt so discouraged and unwelcomed that we decided to leave. it was a weekday, in the morning. not crowded. he could have escorted us to the cats for a few minutes. what's the big deal? the staff at other shelters (north shore, for example) are super friendly and warm. we won't be going back to Islip, which is a shame because their animals deserve homes, too.

Recently went through the process of visiting local shelters and adopting another dog after our older dog passed away after 15 years together. This review does not reflect the dogs what-so-ever, so please come visit this shelter to adopt and give these dogs a forever home/family. The sheer number of dogs that this facility has is massive and they have so many dogs to choose from big and small / young and old. We met a few dogs that we absolutely loved, but at the end of the day we ended up adopting another dog in need from another shelter because we felt the staff was a little difficult to deal with here. When meeting the dogs, the staff seemed to hinder on the negatives of each dog instead of seeing how happy we were during the meet and greets. I understand they like to warn potential ado

the lady at the front is off putting and rude when you ask to see dogs after seeing cats. we are looking to open up our home to another cat…. but would decided then and there we’d also be open to a dog if they had one we fall in love with. apparently the cat scent makes the dogs upset according to her, ok understandable. but i’m sure they can smell the cats on the other end of the building anyway??? also the policy here is weird, if their animals don’t get along with your pets at home they WONT take their animals back. so if my cat doesn’t like the shelter cat… i have to get it a new home?? are you kidding? i hate these shelters because they kill animals. they have a lot of cute cats i wish i could take.

Had someone promised a dog from here, already a lengthy process and wait for the pup. Just to be disappointed RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMASS. If I could give zero I would. They had given it away after weeks and months of promising it. Maybe if they had more compassion they’d be able not only to maintain a 4-5/5 stars but instead they can add this 1 star review to their Christmas list and put it under the tree for Santa to find the same disappointment we did. Petty place for pets should be the title of this shelter. Do not recommend

I adopted Al, an old blind and deaf maltipoo from them January of 2024. He was only expected to live a short time, but he has graced me with his love for the past 1.5 years! The staff was very efficient and honest about all of his conditions and the shelter was clean and well run. I have gone to several events with Al and stopped in multiple times, always greeted with friendly faces and love for my little miracle. Looking forward to the HOWL O WEEN costume contest on October 18 :) Al will be representing the alumni of the shelter! I hope lots of people come and support the shelter and the dogs and cats that are waiting for homes......and maybe luck out like I did and find love!
